It’s International Women’s Day, where women from all walks of life come together to celebrate and unite. So what better time to shine a light on the women who inspire me. I am just over 3 months into my Powered by Me adventure, and I don’t believe I would have even created, let alone completed 3 months of this journey so far without the amazing women I have in my life.
The women in my family
My Mum, Sister and Grandma inspire me every day. They have nurtured, guided and helped me through good and bad, and I am so grateful to have them in my life. These women are all happy-go-lucky, positive people, who make me laugh and love life. There’s never a dull moment, especially with my 93-year-old Grandma who is still cracking jokes. My sister moved to Australia about 6 years ago now and his living her dream and helping others through her social and life coaching work. My mum moved to a foreign country in her twenties, is phenomenal at languages and is always there when I need her.
The girls
My best friends and my other 7 sisters I have in my life. Some of these girls have been by my side from the age of 3 and we have literally grown up as toddlers together, through to teens, twenties and now thirties. Some are now mums themselves and despite the responsibility, still make me feel young and carefree. We are creatives, business owners, mums, wives, sisters, twin sisters, maths teachers, buyers, merchandisers, nurses and more – I adore you all. You have all helped to shape me and stick by my side no matter what and I can’t wait to make more memories with you all.
The mums
Now some of us are mothers, have created a new life and are nurturing their sons or daughters. Here are just a few of them in my life. I take my hat off to you all! Not only are you looking after others, but you’re creating the best path you possibly can, for another human being – the ultimate sacrifice and I will be sure to learn from you all along the way!
The campaigner – changing history
Nicola is one of my good friends and has changed history. She is a feminist, an activist, a campaigner and above all, puts her beliefs into practice to make change happen, so that others can have a more equal and fair life in the future. Along the way she has been trolled, judged, verbally abused. And yet, she has dismissed all the negativity and continued on the path towards change for what she believes in. She is determined, steadfast and an honourable woman who I admire greatly.
When Nicola was sent home from a temp job with PwC for refusing to wear heels (she asked why she couldn’t wear flats like the men in the office and was laughed at) instead of just shrugging it off, she decided to do something about it. She turned an outdated and sexist dress code into a fair debate about how women are represented in the workplace. Since she has sparked parliamentary debate, leading to reports finding that some women are still being forced to wear heels, make-up and revealing clothes by their employer. The point is women should have a choice. Just like a choice on their education, careers and more. Nicola has recently set up an ace site called Who Are You Wearing that attempts to redress the gender balance through skits, humour and showing just how old fashioned stereotyping is nowadays.
#BeBoldForChange and be a woman who is strong, determined, confident and resilient. Be who you want to be and don’t let inequality stop you from doing so.
I love you Sis!! You inspire me every day too xxxxx
